Professionalizing the Family for Families in Business
Course Description
One of the critical skills for members of families in business is to be able to shift from familial (personal) to work (professional) relationships. This course will cover principles in transitioning the family into better understanding, clarifying expectations, alignment of individual and family needs with business demands. Discussions will include family teambuilding skills that will facilitate working effectively and harmoniously together.

Resource Person: Ms. Pilar Unidad-Tolentino
Pilar Unidad-Tolentino, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of the Leadership and Strategy Department of the John Gokongwei School of Management, Ateneo de Manila University, where she teaches courses in Strategic Management, International Business and Trade, and Family Business Management and Leadership.
Pilar is a faculty member and mentor of the Family Firm Institute (FFI) – a Boston, USA –based professional organization of family business members, advisors, and academics, - with currently more than 2,000 members from more than 88 countries around the world. Pilar teaches in FFI Global Education Network handling subjects on Family Business Advising and Family Business Wealth Advising. She is also currently a member of the Research Applied Board of the Family Business Review journal.
As a family business consultant, she is a resource person and a facilitator in the area of strengthening the family relationship, professionalizing the family and the business, managing conflicts and differences, bridging and connecting multi-generational family members, developing family business leadership and family-team.
Pilar earned her Ph.D. in Leadership Studies from Ateneo de Manila University, where she also graduated Cum Laude and Program Awardee for her Bachelor of Science degree in Management –Honors Program. She completed her Masters in Management (with Distinction) at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM). She received her certification on Family Business Advising and Advanced Certificate in Family Business Advising through the Global Education Network (GEN) program of FFI and was the first Filipino awardee of two scholarships - the DeVisscher & Co., and the Carmen Bianchi Family Business Associates scholarships. She holds a professional diploma in Family Ministries and Counseling by the Center for Family Ministries (RMT-CEFAM) where she also served as the Executive Director (2007 – 2013) and a pastoral family counselor (2010-2015).
