Conducting Family Council Meetings
by Mr. Ricky Mercado and Ms. Marijo Caronongan
“Family meeting can help build a stronger family and a stronger business. They help the family plan for the future of the business in an orderly and constructive way. They can smooth such difficult transitions as the succession of new leadership or the professionalization of the business. They can avert painful and costly conflict by helping the family address early and openly the issues that inevitably arise in a family business.”
- Ward and Aronoff, Family Meetings, 1992
ATENEO FAMILY BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER (ATENEO FBDC) understands how it may be challenging for families in business to conduct productive family business meetings - with business matters discussed thoroughly and openly, objectively; decisions are reached through constructive alignment of differences in opinions and consensus building; successes and milestones are celebrated while challenges are faced and conquered through teamwork; and family members coming out of the meeting confident about the business’ direction, clear on specific plans and steps to be taken , and assured of the family members’ commitment to the success of both the business and the family.
ATENEO FBDC’s FACILITATION ON CONDUCTING FAMILY MEETINGS assists business families in developing skills, structures, and systems that are essentials in conducting effective business meeting. Through a combination of input sessions, structured activities, and observing actual business meetings, this facilitation will allow family members to learn through knowing and doing.
